“This is the reality of Hudson County’s collaboration with ICE. It is why 61 immigrant-justice organizations just issued a statement calling for the end of the contract, in a coalition led in part by Freedom for Immigrants, which has been instrumental in ending similar contracts in California and elsewhere. It is why the legal service providers of the Brooklyn and Bronx Defenders, who called for the contract’s renewal in 2018 on the understandable grounds of concern for keeping their clients nearby, have this year instead pledged neutrality. As they explain it, ending the contract does risk transfers but keeping it helps enable ICE’s cruel work of detention.”
