The Bronx Defenders Responds to White House Immigration Proposal

On January 25, the White House released its Framework on Immigration Reform & Border Security. The Bronx Defenders’ Managing Director of Immigration, Sarah Deri Oshiro, responded with the following statement:

“The immigration proposal put forth by the Administration offers questionable relief for Dreamers in return for draconian policies that will harm immigrant communities. Problematic aspects of the plan include increased border enforcement, more funding for interior agents, and the elimination of a path for parents and siblings of Americans to reunite with their families in the United States.

Every day in the Bronx, we see how immigrant communities of color are already heavily policed and disproportionately impacted by government interventions. The proposed changes by the White House will only escalate existing threats against our clients, particularly those who have had contact with the criminal justice system. We call for Congress to provide a meaningful solution for Dreamers, which preserves family unity and due process rights, and does not tear immigrant communities apart.”
