Patch: Corey Johnson And Carlos Menchaca Announce A $16.6 Million Allocation To Fund The New York Immigrant Family Unity Project


“City Council Speaker Corey Johnson and Committee on Immigration Chair Carlos Menchaca announced today that the City Council is dedicating $16.6 million of this year’s budget to fund and expand the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project (NYIFUP), the nation’s first public defender system for detained immigrants facing deportation. NYIFUP, funded by the City Council, is a program designed to provide free legal representation to eligible detained immigrants facing deportation. The funding for Fiscal Year 2020 for NYIFUP providers (The Bronx Defenders, Legal Aid Society, and Brooklyn Defender Services) will help ensure detained immigrants continue to have access to legal counsel and due process as the Trump Administration continues to ramp up immigration enforcement.”
