Kayla Bennett


Kayla is a Licensed Master Social Worker in the Criminal Defense Practice. She received her MSW from The University of Chicago with a focus on policy and direct practice with individuals involved in the criminal justice system. She cofounded an organization for students interested in the criminal justice/social work interface and as a university research assistant worked on a study that explored the efficacy of Chicago’s specialized court and probation programs for individuals with mental illness. Kayla received her B.A. in sociology from Wesleyan University in 2010. While earning her degree she taught a theater class at York Correctional Institute and facilitated weekly discussion groups with incarcerated women. Kayla is originally from Austin, Texas where she worked for the Texas Jail Project to improve conditions in Texas county jails. She is a member of Social Workers Against Criminalization and the Bronx Defenders LGBTQ working group.
