Courtney graduated from The University of the District of Columbia, David A. Clarke School of Law in 2012. There, she advocated as a student attorney for the special education rights of juveniles and adults in the criminal justice system, as well as for parents accused of child abuse or neglect. She spent her final summer of law school as an intern with the Maryland Office of the Public Defender, where she had the opportunity to represent individuals on misdemeanor and traffic offenses. After graduation, Courtney began her career working as a Staff Attorney with Brooklyn Defender Services. During her tenure with BDS, she represented New York City residents in Brooklyn Criminal Court. After leaving that position, she began working as an Assistant Public Defender with the Maryland Office of the Public Defender where she represented individuals charged with misdemeanor and felony offenses in Charles County, Maryland. She also volunteered her time to coach the mock trial team at UDC David A. Clarke School of Law.
