In this podcast, Bronx Defenders’ clients and staff tell their stories. One client recounts how he was beaten up by the police — and ended up in a coma. He hasn’t been the same ever since. Another client describes how his negative experiences with stop-and-frisk inspired him to become a police reform activist. But there are more uplifting stories, too. A group of investigators bond over their love for music; four years later, they are playing social justice-infused jazz and blues in venues all over New York City. And one of our community organizers rallies a group of community members and clients to speak out against police brutality.
The South Bronx is sometimes only associated with endemic poverty and violence, but it is in reality an incredibly vibrant, resilient, and creative community with a diverse array of residents with fascinating stories.
