In 2009, The Bronx Defenders received nearly $9 million from the City of New York, Office of the Criminal Justice Coordinator to provide indigent defense services to clients facing criminal charges and to parents facing allegations of abuse and neglect of their children in the Bronx. But The Bronx Defenders’ model of holistic advocacy requires more than the conventional vision of public defense, where advocacy happens only in the courtroom. Instead, The Bronx Defenders leverages the sum total of its resources to provide social service support, civil legal representation, community action and civic engagement opportunities, and other services that address more than a case. The Bronx Defenders partners with its clients to resolve the many issues that plague the poor of New York City – homelessness, unemployment, under-education, substance abuse, and mental illness, to name a few.
Raising an additional $950,000 in program support with other unrestricted funds exceeding $350,000, The Bronx Defenders is able to augment its service model to offer every client the benefits of holistic advocacy. And every dollar counts. With management and fundraising costs at less than 9 percent of total operating expenses, 91 cents of every dollar donated to The Bronx Defenders goes directly to providing clients direct services and to furthering the adoption of holistic advocacy models across the country.
